Top Ways to Get Fit with Your Pet

As any pet owner knows, our furry friends have a knack for becoming a big part of our lives. They are there for us when we are blue and they are by our sides when it is time to play. It’s only natural that they should become a part of our efforts to stay fit too.

In fact, pets can do far more than simply become a part of our fitness regimen; they can help us take it to the next level. At ELLE Fit Active, we’re all about incorporating your pet into your stretching routine, but there are other ways they can help motivate you to move more too.

Dogs need walking; this is no secret. While regular walking is great exercise in itself, a casual walk around the block with your canine companion isn't going to burn that many calories or make you sweat. Instead of just walking, work in some gentle cardio training for you and your dog whenever you go outside. You could try a more active game of fetch where your four-legged friend must chase after you to return the object you’ve thrown, or you can train your pet to join you as you shuttle run between two set points in your garden or at a local park.

Be sure to respond to the signals given to you by your body and also by your dog. Push each other, but don’t overdo it, and you have for yourself a simple and effective cardio workout.

Cats are not as likely to want to run alongside you as you jog or cycle around the local park, but it is still possible to enjoy a fulfilling exercise session with them. To achieve this, you need to indulge your cat’s natural love of play, as well as their keen hunting instinct.

Use your feline’s favourite toy and encourage them to chase you on a short circuit or during your shuttle runs. Again, make sure that neither of you overdo it and build up your sessions over a long period of time to get the best fitness results for you and your cat.

Keeping your body limber and flexible is a key component of any fitness regimen. Utilise stretching and yoga exercises to prime your body for fitness success, and give yourself a great workout in the process. This sort of exercise can be enjoyed without ever leaving the comfort of your living room.

What about your pet? They’ll be fascinated by all the different angles you’ll find yourself in and be keen to join in wherever possible. Having a pet present is not only great to keep you motivated on your fitness journey, but it also does wonders for your sense of peace and overall wellbeing.
